Wine of the Week: 2021 Ridge Geyserville

Many of us will be grilling this Memorial Day and, for the wine, you can’t do much better than the 2021 Ridge Geyserville, an Alexander Valley blend dominated by zinfandel (76 percent). The wine was first produced in 1966, so it’s the longest continuously produced zin in the Ridge portfolio.

Zinfandel, in general, is an excellent choice with grilled meat or poultry, because it stands up to the smoky, spicy flavors of such foods. The Ridge Geyserville gains added complexity from the addition of carignane, petite sirah and alicante bouschet to the blend. All the grapes are grown organically on three adjoining parcels.

The wine is ripe yet lively, with brambly berry, notes of baking spices and roasted coffee and a hint of white pepper. It finishes with fine tannins. At $55, it’s admittedly a splurge, but it’s a delicious one.
