Wine of the Week: 2016 Home Field Red Blend

Adam Sbragia – a fourth-generation winemaker who’s the son of Ed Sbragia, perhaps best known as the longtime former winemaker at Beringer Vineyards – has released his own Dry Creek Valley wine project, Home Field Red Blend. Adam, whose day job is making wine with his dad at Sbragia Family Vineyards, grew up in Dry Creek Valley, where his great-grandfather settled after leaving Italy in 1904. The Sbragia Family Vineyards wines are focused on the Dry Creek appellation.

For Home Field Red Blend, Adam Sbragia sourced grapes from six vineyards in Dry Creek, which he refers to as his “home field.” About half the blend is zinfandel; the rest is cabernet sauvignon, merlot and a bit of petite sirah and carignane.

The zin definitely shows. The wine is bright, lively and “zinny,” with brambly raspberry and spice and manageable tannins. It’s easy to drink and would be a great wine for a backyard barbecue with summer. And it’s fairly priced, at $25.
