Wine of the Week: NV Piper Sonoma Brut Rosé

Rosé sparkling wine is a must at my house for Valentine’s Day. And for a widely available, affordable ($22) choice, it’s tough to beat the non-vintage Piper Sonoma Brut Rosé from  Sonoma County.  Piper Sonoma was founded 40 years ago, and the winery sources grapes from around Sonoma County. The wines are now being made under the direction of consultant Keith Hock, who was at Schramsberg for 11 years.

This méthode champenoise rosé is dominated by chardonnay (pinot noir and pinot blanc make up the balance) and contains a small portion of aged reserve wines. The wine is extremely fresh, with delicate citrus and strawberry flavors and enough weight to pair with lighter foods, all with a pretty color that’s very enticing. And the perfect hue for Valentine’s Day.
