Some health-conscious wine drinkers have turned lately to low-alcohol wines, most of which check in at around 8 to 10 percent alcohol by volume. Most of these wines are made by removing some of the alcohol from a regular wine. It can be challenging to produce a flavorful wine with enough body, but many producers are succeeding. (Sunny With a Chance of Flowers, for example, is a low-alcohol California brand with some delicious wines.)
Forrest Estate in New Zealand’s Marlborough region has a brand, Brigid, that, according to the winery, achieves the lower alcohol largely through its vineyard practices. The 2022 sauvignon blanc has all the flavors you’d expect from New Zealand: It’s very aromatic, with flavors of melon, pink grapefruit and a hint of tomato stem and persistent acidity. A tad light in the middle, perhaps, but you really don’t feel as if you’re missing out. The wine has 9.5 percent alcohol and 80 calories per serving.
The Brigid sauvignon blanc sells for about $20. If you can’t find it in stores, it’s available at familywineriesdirect.com or from wine.com.
