The Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley hasn’t been in the family’s hands for years,  but Robert’s adult children have their own wine projects these days. Oberon is part of eldest son Michael Mondavi’s portfolio of brands.

Of the reds, I prefer this Napa Valley merlot, which has a little syrah and zinfandel in the blend. The wine is dark, ripe and lively, with black currant fruit accented by baking spice. The finish has firm but approachable tannins. The price is approachable, too: $23.
