This grüner, which belongs in a budget wine hall of fame, is from a somewhat unlikely place – Hungary. Well, maybe it’s not that unlikely, as the grape is grown just across the border in Austria. But you’re not likely to find an Austrian grüner this good for 5 bucks, which is the price at my local Trader Joe’s in Northern California.
The wine is steely dry, with flavors of green apple, lime and a bare hint of white pepper. At just 12 percent alcohol (and with such a low price), it’s positively gulpable on a warm summer evening.
