Wine of the Week: 2014 Foursight Wines “Zero” Pinot Noir

Foursight is a family-owned vineyard and winery in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. The winery was founded in 2006 by the Charles family with the aim of producing only estate wines from the family’s 15-acre Charles Vineyard, which is planted primarily to pinot noir and sauvignon blanc, with a little semillon.

There are several pinots in the lineup, including this one, so named because it sees zero new oak. Instead, the purity of the fruit is showcased. The wine has a light color, but it has plenty of red fruit: lively, fresh raspberry, cherry and a hint of cranberry.

As for the geeky details, half the fruit was destemmed, while the rest was whole cluster. There’s no inoculation for alcoholic fermentation or malolactic, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Interestingly, the bottle carries an ingredient label — grapes, tartaric acid, sulfur dioxide — and notes that the wine is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

The wine costs $39 and can be ordered at the winery’s website here.
